Your Soup Stories Board
Dear friends,
Recently, I have asked you guys to share your chinese soups stories with me if you have one. I received the first story in June. Here it is. I hope this soup stories board will grow in time.
Thank you for sending in your soup stories.
5 June 2007
Maria Leung from Germany
This is not just a story but an inquiry regarding gou ji/Chinese wolfberries/Boxthorn Fruit.
A relative of mine was ill for several months with various aches and pains and visited his western medical practitioner who prescribed him numerous and different courses of western medicine for some time. However, these did not help at all.
My relative eventually went to Hong Kong and visited a chinese medical practitioner who then prescribed him a course of chinese soups based on the root of the plant from which Gou Ji is derived. After just a few sessions, his symtoms disapeared and his health improved greatly.
This adds weight to the argument that Gou Ji possess very positive health improving properties.
Question: does anyone know the name of the plant from which it is derived? Each plant has one main stem approx. 5mm in diameter and can grow at least 50cm tall. Leaves are dark green and somewhat rounded - removed from stem in one hand movement from top to bottom of stem.
Phoebe's response:
Hi Maria, the scientific name of the gou ji zi plant is Lycium barbarum L.
I haven't heard that the root of this plant can be used in chinese herbal soups, but then, my knowledge of traditional chinese medicine is limited.
For the prescription to have worked so well on your relative, he or she must have been quite deficient in some vital elements that the root is providing.
I have the same sort of experience with vitamin C. I contract flu and cold nearly on a monthly basis when I was young. When my mum started me on
vitamin C supplements, the resulting bout of good health was very significant.
I am glad to know that your relative has regained good health.
This is fantastic Phoebe. Now I can investigate a bit more about this plant. I have it growing in my garden here in central Germany. After 2/3 years it has now planted root properly and is growing well - at least now I can tell people the actual name.
Many thanks and warm regards, maria.
