Aug 2, 2007, there are herbs and there are herbs

I was sprucing up the chinese herbs and chinese herbal soups page, happily adding chinese characters of chinese herbs listed. Unfortunately, after an hour of hard work, I found out they wouldn't show up properly on the web. Sob! Sob! But too tired to remove them now. So, when you see ?? and ???, just know that they were supposed to be the chinese names of the herbs.

I'm going to bed!

Jul 28, 2007, Added Cooking with Chinese Herbs to the book list

I referred to some of Terry Tan's cookbooks when I was planning to write for chinese herbal soups.

He is different from Ken Hom or Martin Yen in that he is a local, having roots in Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore.

His cookbooks have substantial information and Cooking with Chinese Herbs is not exception. I like that efforts have been made to take "delicious" photos of the food.

Jul 27, 2007, New 2 pages added...sort of

I added 2 pages today. You can find them on the left navigation bar as:

- Beauty Soups
- Recipe Index

Beauty soups is brand new but recipe index is revised from recipe collection.

The page on beauty soups currently features 3 soups using solomon's seal as a key ingredient. All of them use chicken as a complement. I think I have a vegetarian recipe somewhere. Let me go and dig it out. Meanwhile, check out the recipes.

I took the recipe collection page down a couple of weeks back because I was making a lot of changes at the individual recipe pages and got tired of receiving broken links reports from Site Build it.

Sigh...I think I still missed a couple of broken links.

Oh well, will wait for the Site Build It spider to do the link check for me. Easier than for me to check individual links myself.

Bear with me if you find broken link at this chinese soups recipes index page.

Happy souping!
Phoebe

Jun 19, 2007, Happy Dragon Boat Festival !

Today is 19 June 2007 and it is the Dragon Boat Festival.

You know, the festival of dragon boat races and eating rice dumplings till your tummy bloat and protest with indigestion?

No, I am not a close follower of the lunar calendar. I got a hint that this festival is approaching because my granny and her sisters were busy making yummy rice dumplings last week.

I was the main beneficiary along with some of my other relatives close to my granny. Hee! See this pair of dumplings?

rice dumpling rice dumpling

After this photo shoot, they went hurriedly into my stomach. Ahhhh...

That was 2 days ago. I got a headstart.

This morning, granny told me I cannot have any more rice dumplings today. Reason? I ate too many the last few days.

Hmmm ... she happily fed me rice dumplings before the festival and I am sure she will want me to clear them after the festival.

But on the day of the festival ... no dumplings for me.

Well, better early than nothing at all.

She will be whipping up some digestion soups for me soon.

Rice dumplings made from glutinious rice are not easy to digest.

Jun 17, 2007, Welcome to Wontons Heaven

You may have noticed that I have been adding webpages related to wontons recently.

About 2 months back, I decided to start a little info project on wontons. The plan is to gather as much information as I could about a famous little food parcel known as the wonton.

I have fun and angst creating this little section on my website. But overall, it was fun. Brought back memories of old family gatherings.

It is finally completed. I have uploaded all the pages I have and checked for links that do not work (my gosh, there were quite a few.)

At this section, you will find:

  1. factual information about wontons such as "anatomy" & regional difference
  2. wonton folding techniques
  3. a selection of wonton recipes
  4. recipe ideas for wonton wrappers.
I really like the wonton cranes I found. Maybe it will inspire others to create other types of origami using wonton wrappers.

Have a wontonful day!

Dec 5, 2006, The Art of Possibility by Benjamin and Rosamund Zander

I've been reading the Art of Possibility by Benjamin and Rosamund Zander. Two examples Zander gave about life being invented and how our minds make connections stuck out. Here they are:

"In a famous experiment, the Me’en people of Ethiopa were presented for the first time with photographs of people and animals, but were unable to "read" the two-dimensional image. "They felt the paper, sniffed it, crumpled it, and listened to the crackling noise it made; they nipped off little bits and chewed them to taste it." Yet people in our modern world easily equate the photographic image with the object photographed – even though the two resemble each other only in a very abstract sense."

"Recognizing Pablo Picasso in a train compartment, a man inquired of the artist why he did not paint people "the way they really are. Picasso asked what he meant by that expression. The man opened his wallent and took out a snapshot of his wife, saying, "That's my wife." Picasso responded, "Isn't she rather small and flat?"

Food for thought...

Oct 24, 2006, Major site renovation

As I picked up more HTML codes, I want to re-do parts of the my chinese soups website that I felt looked clumsy and unappealing.

Today was the Hari Raya Puasa public holiday. Just what I needed to do a makeover.

I "painted", I "moved" things around and I revised some of the stuff I wrote.

I hope you will like the new look. It's still my online home, still about the magic of homemade chinese soups.

Oct 18, 2006, Double boiler

Double boiler

I couldn't find nice photos of a chinese double boiler so I took some photos of mine.

It has a nice blue fish printed on the front of the pot which I like a lot.

Simple yet bold.

A fish symbolises more than enough...which is always a good thing to have.

Wontons are such wonderful chinese food. I've met people who don't like this kind of food and that kind of food. So far, I haven't met someone who didn't like wontons.

Poorly made wontons maybe, but never wonton itself.

Oct 11, 2006, Yummy Chinese Rice Porridge

Yummy Chinese Rice Porridge

I received an email several months back from a guy who wanted to know if I had the recipe for a thick soup that is made with rice and minced pork.

Took me a while to figure out what he meant. It was also the first time I heard anyone refer to chinese rice porridge as a thick soup.

See, we learn new things all the time.

I promised him I'll find the recipe for him. But it took me very long to get around to it. Thousand apologies!

Well I've finally created a page for the lovely chinese rice porridge. Since it is not strictly a chinese soup, I thought I shouldn't take up too much space. So everything's on one page.

I hope the information is interesting and useful. Enjoy!
